The planned research represents the first systematic and detailed study of the distribution and ecology of the non-marine ostracods (micro-crustaceans) and the accompanying aquatic fauna and flora in Iceland and thus, a first detailed survey of one of the major crustacean groups from Icelandic inland water bodies. Ostracods from lakes, streams, wetlands and springs will be investigated with the aim to:
- Document their spatial distribution and determine their ecological preferences
- Identify the most important ecological parameters which control the distribution of ostracod species
- Identify indicator species valuable for the assessment and monitoring of water bodies
- Apply modern species-ecology relationships to fossil (Holocene) ostracod assemblages from Iceland and lakes in Asia for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimate inferences.
Application deadline: 29.06.15.
