Centre of Excellence in Palaeoscience – 2017 Call for Applications

2017 Call for Applications

The purpose of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Palaeosciences (CoE-Pal) is to support palaeosciences research and education outreach initiatives. The CoE-Pal strives to be a multidisciplinary, multi-institutional and leading palaeosciences research, teaching, and curatorial centre in Africa, taking its place among the outstanding centres of its kind in the world. The CoE-Pal supports the vision of realising a South Africa and Africa united in promoting a new awareness of life in the past through the study of the continent’s rich heritage in fossils and artefacts for the intellectual enrichment and empowerment of all its peoples.

This programme focuses on supporting projects in Palaeontology, Palaeobotany, Palaeo-anthropology, Middle Stone Age Archaeology and cognate disciplines.

 Grants through this Programme:

  • Postgraduate Bursaries (Honours, Masters, Doctorate)
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Operational Support

Those who are eligible are postgraduate students (Honours, Masters and Doctoral), postdoctoral fellows and academic/research staff from one of our partner intuitions: University of the Witwatersrand, University of Cape Town, Iziko Museums of South Africa, Ditsong Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Bloemfontein and Albany Museum.

Application Deadlines:

The Call for Applications opens Thursday, 15 September 2016.  All applications must be submitted no later than Friday, 14 October 2016 at 3 p.m. (local time, GMT+2). Please note that there will be no further extension.

Refer to the Funding Guide for eligibility and other criteria before applying. Paper applications or incomplete applications will automatically be rejected.

Continued funding will be considered based on satisfactory Annual Progress Reporting. A call for the Annual Progress Report will be made shortly.  As with the Grant Application, progress reporting will be completed online through  Note, a Final Report must be submitted three months after completion of your CoE-Pal funded project.

 New requirements by the NRF:

  1.  All applicants are required to register on the NRF ORCID to obtain an ORCID identification number. ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognized. To find out more,
  2. All applicants including researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and postgraduate students are required to have an NRF online profile profiles should be current before you apply for CoE-Pal Grants; and continuously updated.
